USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angles Angels and the Seattle Mariners face off on Monday as the 2014 MLB season begins it’s final two weeks.

The Los Angeles Angels are counting down their magic number as they are a lock at this point to win the American League West. The Angels are 49-25 at home, 9-1 in their last 10 games, and they are coming off of a loss on Sunday. As a team the Angels are hitting .264 with Howie Kendrick hitting .292, Mike Trout hitting .290, and Erick Aybar hitting .286. As a team the Angels pitching staff has an ERA of 3.51 with the starters at 3.64 and the bullpen at 3.26. For game one against the Mariners the Angels start Matt Shoemaker who has won his last six decisions. For the season Shoemaker has allowed 117 hits and 45 earned runs while striking out 119 over 128.1 innings for a 15-4 record and a 3.16 ERA.

The Seattle Mariners are on the outside looking in at the AL Wildcard but they are just percentage points behind the Royals with 14 games left to play. The Mariners are 42-28 on the road, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and they have lost their last two. As a team Seattle is hitting .245 with Robinson Cano hitting .321, Kyle Seager hitting .274, and Dustin Ackley hitting .249. The Mariners pitching staff has an ERA of 3.00 with the starters at 3.30 and the bullpen at 2.40. For game one against the Angels the Mariners start Hisashi Iwakuma who lost in his last start to end a five decision personal winning streak. For the season Iwakuma has allowed 151 hits and 57 earned runs while striking out 138 over 165 innings for a 14-7 record and a 3.11 ERA.

Los Angeles is 6-0 against a team with a winning record, 40-15 as a home favorite, and 13-3 in Shoemaker’s last 16 starts. Seattle is 5-2 in their last seven road games, 11-6 against a team with a winning record, and 6-1 in Iwakuma’s last seven starts. Seattle is 24-52 in their last 76 games agains the Angels.

This should be  very tight close game but I am going to take my chances with the Mariners as the mild dog.
