The Line: Los Angeles Dodgers / Pittsburgh Pirates --- Over/Under:
The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Los Angeles Dodgers meet in game one of their three game set from Dodger Stadium in MLB action on Monday.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to build on a series victory after winning their rubber match against San Diego on Sunday, taking the series finale by a final score of 7-5. Colin Moran led the Pirates by going 2 for 4 with a grand slam, while Elias Diaz added two RBIs with a solo home run and an RBI double. Corey Dickerson added a solo homer of his own to round out Pittsburgh’s scoring in the win. Austin Meadows went 2 for 5 with a double while Josh Bell and Josh Harrison each added a base hit as well in the winning effort. Jameson Taillon threw 4.2 innings, giving up four runs, three runs, on seven hits while striking out four and not factoring in the decision. Kyle Crick picked up the win while Felipe Vazquez notched his 17th save of the season. Nick Kingham will start game one and is 2-3 with a 3.82 ERA and 35 strikeouts this season. This will be Kingham’s first career start against the Dodgers.
The Los Angeles Dodgers will look to build some momentum after snapping a three game slide with a 6-4 win in their series finale against Colorado on Sunday. Matt Kemp led the charge by going 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs. Cody Bellinger added an RBI while Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig each had a double of their own, with Pederson going 3 for 4. Max Muncy went 2 for 2, while Austin Barnes and Yasmani Grandal each contributed a base hit in the winning effort. Ross Stripling gave up all four runs on nine hits while striking out seven over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Daniel Hudson picked up the win to improve to 3-2 this season while Kenley Jansen notched his 22nd save of the year. Alex Wood will start game one and is 4-5 with a 4.00 ERA and 81 strikeouts this season. In his career, Wood is 2-2 with a 2.86 ERA and 47 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh is 0-4 in Kingham’s last 4 starts and 2-5 in their last 7 games against the NL West while the over is 6-2 in their last 8 road games. Los Angeles is 14-6 in Wood’s last 20 home starts and 10-1 in their last 11 series opening matchups while the over is 5-2 in Wood’s last 7 starts overall. Pittsburgh is 2-8 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams and 14-37 in the last 51 meetings between these two teams in Los Angeles.
The Dodgers may have had a rough go at it over the weekend, but did pick up some momentum with a win in the series finale and have the more reliable hurler on the mound in Wood, who has won his last three starts and allowed no more than two runs in each of his last four starts. Pittsburgh picked up a series win against San Diego, but the Padres continue to run hot and cold and the Pirates have struggled with consistency. Kingham hasn’t won any of his last four starts, and keeps bouncing from the minors to the majors and I think it catches up to Pittsburgh here as the Dodgers draw first blood on Monday.
