The Cincinnati Reds and the Miami Marlins will match up on the MLB diamond Monday to kick off their series.

The Reds are fresh out of a set versus the Pirates. Cincinnati lost the first two games of that set 3-2 and 14-0. In the Sunday finale, the Reds fell in a close one 9-8.

For Monday’s game, the Reds will send out Sonny Gray in the start. Over his 138.2 innings and 9-6 record this year, Gray has a 2.92 ERA with 164 Ks and 53 BBs.

Over on the Miami side, they’re coming out of a series versus the Phillies. Miami won 19-11 Friday but fell 9-3 on Saturday. In the Sunday rubber match, the Marlins took it 3-2.

The Marlins will send out Caleb Smith to start on Monday. This year over 117.2 innings and an 8-7 mark, Smith has a 3.82 ERA with 138 Ks and 43 walks.

The Reds are 1-4 in their last five in game one of a series and 5-2 in Gray’s last seven road starts. Cincinnati is 4-1 in Gray’s last five starts versus the NL East and 14-3 in his last 17 overall.

Meanwhile, the Marlins are 20-42 in their last 62 in game one of a series and 1-5 in their last six Monday games. Miami is 4-1 in Smith’s last five home starts and 7-3 in his last 10 in game one of a series.

Gray is on a nice run right now, with three quality starts in his last four games. In that quartet, he’s given up just one earned run over 24.0 innings and is 3-0.

As for Smith, he’s 1-3 over his last four games and has given up 12 earned in his last three starts combined. I can’t find a lot of reasons not to take Gray and the Reds here.
