The New York Mets and the Miami Marlins will kick off the second half of the MLB season with a matchup on Friday.

New York is 40-50 overall on the season, and they’ve got a 17-31 record on the road so far. The Mets are just 3-7 in their last 10 games.

The Mets will roll with Jason Vargas as the starter on Friday. Vargas is sitting at 3-4 this year with a 3.77 ERA and 63 strikeouts.

Over on the Miami side, they’re currently 33-55 this year. The Marlins are 15-29 at home and have also lost seven of their last 10 games.

The Marlins are going with Caleb Smith in the Friday start. Across his 4-4 record this season, Smith has a 3.50 ERA with 88 strikeouts.

The Mets are 5-16 in their last 21 in game one of a series and 8-26 in their last 34 road games. New York is 2-7 in their last nine after a loss and 1-4 in their last five Friday games.

Meanwhile, the Marlins are 17-35 in their last 52 versus a team with a losing record and 8-20 in their last 28 Friday games. Miami is 11-29 in their last 40 games following a loss and 4-12 in their last 16 home games.

Vargas is just 2-4 since April 19, but does sport a 2.76 ERA with 60 strikeouts in 65.1 innings in that time. Mostly he’s auditioning as a trade piece right now.

As for Smith, he put up a nice start versus Atlanta back on Saturday. He went up against the Mets on April 1 and managed a no-decision.

I’m not thrilled with either team right now obviously, but the Mets should have a slight edge here.
