The Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets will match up on the MLB diamond Friday to start off their weekend set.

The Phillies just finished up against the Braves this week. Philadelphia won Tuesday 2-0 but fell Wednesday 9-2. In the rubber match Thursday, the Phillies lost 12-6.

For the Friday game, the Phillies will be sending out Vince Velasquez in the start. Across his 51.1 innings and 2-5 record this year, Velasquez has a 4.73 ERA with 60 Ks and 23 BBs.

Over on the Mets’ side, they played a Subway Series (well, two games anyway) against the Yankees this week. The Mets split that pair with a 4-2 win Tuesday and a 5-1 loss Wednesday.

Jacob deGrom will take the hill for the Mets in the Friday opener. Over 103.0 innings and a 4-7 mark so far, deGrom has a 3.32 ERA with 128 Ks and 22 BBs.

The Phillies are 2-5 in their last seven in game one of a series and 1-4 in their last five Friday games. Philadelphia is 7-20 in Velasquez’s last 27 road starts and 2-6 in his last eight Friday starts.

Meanwhile, the Mets are 2-5 in the last seven Friday games and 1-8 in their last nine in game one of a series. New York is 1-6 in deGrom’s last seven starts and 0-4 in his last four Friday starts.

Velasquez has been a little choppy over his last three starts. In that span, he’s given up nine earned over 11.2 innings on 11 hits. He’s got an 0-2 record in that stretch as well.

As for deGrom, he’s rolling pretty well with six straight quality starts to his credit, and he’s recorded at least seven strikeouts in each of those games. I like deGrom to keep it going here—so long as he can get some help from the bats, I like the Mets.
