The Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Mets will finish up their MLB series on Sunday.

In the Friday opener of this set, the Mets managed a 6-3 win. On Saturday, New York made it two straight with a 3-0 win.

For the Sunday finale, the Pirates will be sending out Chris Archer in the start. Over his 96.2 innings and 3-7 mark so far, Archer has a 5.40 ERA with 112 Ks and 47 BBs.

The Pirates had five hits in the Saturday game and couldn’t make anything stick. The lone batter with two knocks was Kevin Newman who went 2-for-4.

Over on the Mets’ side, they’re going with Jason Vargas on Sunday. In his 88.2 innings and 5-5 record this year, Vargas has a 3.96 ERA with 76 Ks and 36 BBs.

The four hits on Saturday for the Mets were split between three players. JD Davis had the biggest impact with a double and a two-run homer.

The Pirates are 0-4 in their last four in game three of a series and 3-10 in Archer’s last 13 road starts. The over is 22-8 in Pitt’s last 30 in game three of a series and 4-1 in Archer’s last five Sunday starts.

Meanwhile, the Mets are 4-1 in their last five in game three of a series and 5-11 in their last 16 Sunday games. New York is 7-3 in Vargas’ last 10 home starts and 2-5 in his last seven starts with four days’ rest.

Archer had consecutive quality starts going before giving up four earned on seven hits in 6.0 innings during a loss his last time out. He hasn’t recorded a victory since June 6.

As for Vargas, he has two straight wins to his name, with 12.0 innings and three earned on four hits in those. I don’t have a whole lot of faith in the Pirates’ ability to back up Archer these days so I’m going Mets here.
