The Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees will kick off their respective MLB seasons on Thursday from Yankee Stadium.
The Orioles will be starting RHP Andrew Cashner in the opener Thursday. In 2018, Cashner finished with a 5.29 ERA, 177 hits, 97 runs, 99 strikeouts and a 4-15 record over his 153.0 innings.
Leading the Orioles in spring training offense was Drew Jackson with 18 hits, seven runs and nine RBI. Joey Rickard had a solid preseason for Baltimore as well with 17 hits, eight runs and 10 RBI.
Over on the Yankees’ side, they’re going with RHP Masahiro Tanaka on Thursday. Over 156.0 innings last season, Tanaka logged a 3.75 ERA, a 12-6 record, 141 hits and 159 strikeouts in total.
New York’s top man at the plate this spring was Miguel Andujar with 17 hits, seven runs and four RBI. Tyler Wade also had a nice run with 16 hits, 13 runs and three RBI of his own during the spring.
The Orioles are 14-40 in their last 54 overall and 14-41 in their last 55 versus the AL East. Baltimore is 1-8 in their last nine Thursday games and 1-6 in Cashner’s last seven road starts.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 7-2 in their last nine following an off-day and and 73-33 in their last 106 home games. New York is 46-22 in Tanaka’s last 68 home starts and 6-1 in his last seven starts in game one of a series.
Cashner had a few solid outings over the last month of the 2018 season, but did give up a total of 15 earned across 12.0 innings in his final three appearances. The good news is that he logged a quality start the last time he faced the Yanks—three earned in 7.0 innings.
As for Tanaka, he’s going to have to carry some extra weight in the early-going with the Yankees’ injury issues, but with a fresh arm and a solid bullpen he should be able to pull it off. I like New York in the opener here.
