New York, New York
New York Yankees +130 / Boston Red Sox -140 O/U: 8.5
*****NOTE: This game has been postponed and will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Saturday, August 3. *****
The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees will lock up in a huge weekend rivalry MLB series starting on Thursday.
The Red Sox just finished up against the Indians. Boston took the first game of that pair 12-5, but then fell on Tuesday 7-5 to split the series. In the rubber match Wednesday Boston fell 14-9.
For Thursday’s game, the Sox will be sending out lefty hurler Chris Sale in the start. Over his 62.1 innings and 1-6 mark this year, Sale has a 4.19 ERA with 88 Ks and 18 BBs.
Over on the Yankees’ side, they played the Padres this week. New York won the opener 5-2, but then fell in a tough one 5-4 Tuesday before bouncing back 7-0 to take the series in the Wednesday game.
For Thursday’s start, New York is going with LHP JA Happ as the starter. Happ has 58.1 innings with a 4-3 record this year, alongside a 5.09 ERA, 50 Ks and 13 BBs.
The Red Sox are 8-3 in their last 11 Thursday games and 3-8 in Sale’s last 11 starts. Boston is 1-7 in Sale’s last eight Thursday starts and 0-6 in his last six in game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Yanks are 10-3 in their last 13 versus a team with a winning record and 44-15 in their last 59 home games versus a team with a winning record. NY is 4-0 in Happ’s last four starts and 7-0 in his last seven with four days’ rest.
Sale had some early difficulties but has pitched quite well since mid-April. Over his last eight outings, Sale has only allowed three runs just once and otherwise been beneath that total. The thing is, Sale is 0-2 in those eight games.
As for Happ, he had a bad game versus Baltimore (3.2 innings; six earned; nine hits) but bounced back against KC with 6.0 innings and three earned his last time up.
This should be an interesting matchup, especially if both guys bring their good stuff. I’m thinking Sale will pitch well through the fifth inning or so, and then the Yankees guys have a good shot at the bullpen. If Happ can keep things under control on the other side I like New York to get one here. Should be a great game regardless. This rivalry is one of the greatest in sports, so settle in and enjoy.
