The Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees meet in game one of a four game set from Yankee Stadium in MLB action on Thursday night.
The Kansas City Royals will look to pick up some steam after avoiding the sweep at the hands of the White Sox after a 4-3 win in ten innings on Wednesday. Hunter Dozier and Alex Gordon each had two RBIs with Dozier going 2 for 4 at the dish with a home run. Jorge Soler, Whit Merrifield, Chris Owings and Billy Hamilton each chipped in a base hit for KC in the winning effort. Brad Keller gave up two runs on four hits while walking four and striking out three over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Wily Peralta got the win to improve to 2-1 while Scott Barlow picked up his 1st save of the year. Homer Bailey will start game one and is 1-1 with a 5.29 ERA and 21 strikeouts this season. In his career, Bailey is 1-1 with a 5.84 ERA and 7 strikeouts against the Yankees.
The New York Yankees will look to keep the ball rolling after sweeping a two game set with Boston following a 5-3 win in the series finale on Wednesday. Brett Gardner led the Yankees with a home run and four RBIs while Clint Frazier went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Luke Voit added a double of his own to round out the offense for New York as the Yankees cranked out just five hits as a team in the winning effort. J.A. Happ gave up three runs on six hits while striking out four over 6.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Tommy Kahnle got the win to improve to 1-0 while Aroldis Chapman picked up his 3rd save of the season. Domingo German will start game one and is 3-0 with a 1.38 ERA and 14 strikeouts this season. This will be German’s first career start against Kansas City.
Kansas City is 4-12 in their last 16 games overall and 16-43 in their last 59 road games while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 games against a team with a losing record. New York is 8-3 in German’s last 11 starts and 40-19 in their last 59 series opening matchups while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. Kansas City is 38-83 in the last 121 meetings between these two teams and 17-46 in the last 63 meetings between these two teams in New York.
Bailey did a good job buckling down against Cleveland, but he’s still been a far from trustworthy pitcher over the last couple of years on the whole in my opinion. German is a fairly unknown commodity, but for the most part this season he’s been pretty reliable, allowing just two runs over 13 innings of work. I just think that New York is the more potent of the two lineups and is more likely to do damage to Bailey than Kansas City is to do to German, so I’ll side with New York on the run line as I expect the Yankees to unload on Bailey.
