The Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees meet in game three of their four game MLB set in baseball action from Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Kansas City Royals will look to rebound after dropping game two on Friday by a final score of 6-2. Adalberto Mondesi and Alex Gordon each had an RBI with Gordon adding a double. Hunter Dozier chipped in a double of his own while Jorge Soler and Terrance Gore each had a base hit to cap off Kansas City’s offense as the Royals put up just five hits as a team in the losing effort. Jakob Junis took the loss, falling to 1-2 after allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits over 5.1 innings of work. Heath Fillmyer will start game three and is 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA and 4 strikeouts this season. This will be Fillmyer’s second career start against the Yankees.
The New York Yankees will look to build some steam after evening the series up at one win apiece following their victory on Friday. Brett Gardner led the Yankees with two RBIs including a home run while Mike Tauchman chipped in a solo blast and DJ LeMahieu added an RBI as well. Aaron Judge and Kyle Higashioka each had a double and Tyler Wade went 2 for 3 at the dish while Luke Voit and Gleyber Torres each chipped in a base knock in the victory. CC Sabathia got the win to improve to 1-0 after allowing just an unearned run on three hits while walking four and striking out five over five innings of work. Masahiro Tanaka will start game three and is 1-1 with a 3.22 ERA and 21 strikeouts this season. This will be Tanaka’s second career start against Kansas City.
Kansas City is 1-6 in Fillmyer’s last 7 road starts and 17-44 in their last 61 road games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. New York is 2-5 in Tanaka’s last 7 starts and 2-5 in their last 7 games against a right-handed starter while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 home games. Kansas City is 39-83 in the last 122 meetings between these two teams and 18-46 in the last 64 meetings between these two teams in New York.
New York is probably the safer bet here considering that the Yankees’ bats woke out of their slumber on Friday, but the Yanks are still banged up and aren’t necessarily worth the heavy juice and can be an iffy bet on the RL. On the other hand, Kansas City is so up and down, you never know what you’re going to get from the Royals on a day-to-day basis. Instead, I’m going to side with the over. Fillmyer has allowed eight runs in eight innings so far this season, and Tanaka is fresh off of his worst start of the year, surrendering five runs in four innings against the White Sox. I think this is a game that could hit double digits, but at the very least will rise over the total here.
