Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees meet in the rubber match of their three game set from Yankee Stadium in MLB action on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Angels will look to win the series after evening up the set at one win apiece following their 11-4 beatdown of New York in game two on Saturday. Mike Trout had a career day, going 5 for 5 with a home run, three doubles and four RBIs. Jose Briceno went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, while Albert Pujols added two RBIs of his own in the winning effort. Shohei Ohtani and Andrelton Simmons each had an RBI to round out the scoring for the Halos in the win, while Zack Cozart added a pair of base hits as well. Jaime Barria got the win to improve to 4-1 this season after giving up all four runs on six hits while striking out four over five innings of work. Garrett Richards will start game three and is 4-3 with a 3.31 ERA and 57 strikeouts this season. In his career, Richards is 0-4 with an 8.10 ERA and 15 strikeouts against the Yankees.

The New York Yankees will look to rebound and win the set after dropping game two on Saturday. All of New York’s damage on the board was done with the long ball, as Austin Romine hit a two run home run, while Aaron Judge and Brett Gardner each added a solo shot of their own to round out the scoring for the Yankees in the loss. Miguel Andujar added a pair of base hits as well as the four players accounted for all seven Yankee hits in the loss. Sonny Gray took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out seven over 3.2 innings of work. Masahiro Tanaka will start game three and is 5-2 with a 4.95 ERA and 50 strikeouts this season. In his career, Tanaka s 2-0 with a 1.60 ERA and 40 strikeouts against the Angels.

Los Angeles is 3-7 in their last 10 games overall and 0-4 in Richards’ last 4 starts against the AL East while under is 5-1-1 in their last 7 road games. New York is 4-0 in Tanaka’s last 4 starts against the AL West and 39-12 in their last 51 home games while the over is 6-1 in their last 7 games overall. New York is 5-0 in Tanaka’s last 5 starts against the Angels while Los Angeles is 0-5 in Richards’ last 5 starts against the Yankees.

This pick for me solely lies in the pitching matchup, as the offense kind of cancels out with how well L.A. plays on the road and the Yankees play at home. Tanaka has given up no less than three runs in each of his last four starts, but he’s had a lot of success in his career against the Angels, with New York winning all five of his career starts against the Angels. Richards on the other hand, despite pitching well for much of the season, has had no luck against New York with an ERA north of eight and not recording a win. The Angels have also lost all five of Richards’ career starts against the Yankees. Lay the juice and back New York to take the win on Sunday.
