The Seattle Mariners and the New York Yankees will match up on the MLB diamond to start their series Monday.
The Mariners just finished up against the Indians this weekend. Seattle lost the first two games of that set 2-1 and 5-4, but on Sunday the Mariners prevented the sweep with a dominant 10-0 victory.
For the Monday opener, the Mariners will be going with Felix Hernandez in the start. Over his 31.1 innings and 1-2 mark this year, Hernandez has a 4.31 ERA with 29 Ks and four walks.
Over on the Yankees’ side, they played the Twins this past weekend. New York split the first two games of that set, then in the rubber match Sunday the Yankees were able to pull out a rain-shortened 8-inning win 4-1.
New York will be sending out veteran CC Sabathia for the start Sunday. In his 20.1 innings and 1-1 record so far, Sabathia has a 2.66 ERA with 16 Ks and six walks.
The Mariners are 4-1 in their last five versus the American League East and 11-3 in their last 14 Monday games. Seattle is 21-6 in Hernandez’s last 27 Monday starts and 3-8 in his last 11 road starts. The Mariners are 4-12 in Hernandez’s last 16 starts and 1-7 in his last eight after five days’ rest.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 36-17 in their last 53 in game one of a series and 26-9 in Sabathia’s last 35 home starts. New York is 5-2 in Sabathia’s last seven starts and 21-10 in his last 31 in game one of a series.
Hernandez has had a few rough starts this year and a few good ones as well; it’s been a real mixed bag. In his last appearance versus the Cubs, Hernandez logged 6.0 innings with eight hits and four earned.
As for Sabathia, it’s tough to know what you’re getting from him these days, aside from the fact that he doesn’t usually last past five innings. That said, Sabathia has been decent this year and started off very well. I like CC to keep it going here and help the Yanks to a win.
