The Line: New York Yankees / Tampa Bay Rays --- Over/Under:
The Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees meet in the finale of their four game set from Yankee Stadium on Sunday.
The Tampa Bay Rays will look to salvage a win and avoid the sweep after dropping the first three games of the set, including a 4-1 defeat in game three on Saturday. Matt Duffy’s solo homer in the top of the 9th was the lone scoring the Rays would do in the loss, as the consolation run came too little too late. Jake Bauers went 2 for 3 with a triple, while Joey Wendle and Carlos Gomez each contributed a base hit in the losing effort. Ryne Stank threw 1.1 scoreless innings in the start, while Ryan Yarbrough took the loss after giving up all four runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four over 3.2 innings of work to fall to 5-3 this season.Wilmer Font will start game four and is 0-3 with an 8.48 ERA and 24 strikeouts this season.
The New York Yankees will look to complete the four game sweep of their division rivals after their third straight win on Saturday. Giancarlo Stanton and Gary Sanchez each had a solo home run, while Gleyber Torres added an RBI and a double and Didi Gregorius added an RBI of his own to round out New York’s scoring in the win. Aaron Judge went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles, while Aaron Hicks added a base hit of his own to cap off New York’s offense in the winning effort. Luis Severino threw eight scoreless innings, striking out nine to climb to 10-2 this season with the win, while Aroldis Chapman notched his 20th save of the year. CC Sabathia will start the finale and is 4-1 with a 3.27 ERA and 47 strikeouts this season. In his career, Sabathia is 16-14 with a 3.77 ERA and 274 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay is 0-8 in their last 8 road games and 1-10- in their last 11 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. New York is 7-3 in Sabathia’s last 10 starts and 10-1 in their last 11 division matchups while the under is 13-3-1 in their last 17 games overall. New York is 10-1 in Sabathia’s last 11 starts against Tampa Bay.
The rest of the league is starting to wise up to this closer strategy that the Rays have implemented over the last few weeks. On top of that, Tampa Bay just simply can’t win on the road, and the Yanks have owned the Rays with Sabathia on the mound over the last few years. There hasn’t been a line released yet, but either way the Yankees will be my play on Sunday to complete the sweep.
