New York Yankees +110 / Tampa Bay Rays -130
The Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees meet in the finale of their three game AL East division set in MLB action from Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.
The Tampa Bay Rays will look to salvage a win and avoid the sweep after dropping the first two games of the set, including a 6-3 loss in game two on Tuesday. Travis D’Arnaud went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI while Avisail Garcia and Mike Zunino each had RBIs as well to round out Tampa Bay’s scoring as a team in the loss. Tommy Pham went 2 for 5 with a double while Willy Adames, Kevin Kiermaier and Guillermo Heredia each had base hits as well in the defeat. Chaz Roe took the loss in relief, falling to 0-3 on the year in the process. Blake Snell will start the finale and is 4-5 with a 3.70 ERA and 101 strikeouts this season. In his career, Snell is 3-5 with a 3.97 ERA and 75 strikeouts against the Yankees.
The New York Yankees will look to complete the sweep after taking down the Rays in game two on Tuesday. Gary Sanchez had two RBIs while Edwin Encarnacion and Cameron Maybin each had a solo home run. Luke Voit went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI and DJ LeMahieu added an RBI as well to finish off the Yankees’ scoring as a team in the win. Gleyber Torres added a base knock of his own to cap off New York’s offense in the victory. J.A. Happ got the win to improve to 7-3 on the year after allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three over five innings of work. Aroldis Chapman struck out the side in the 9th for his 19th save of the season. CC Sabathia will start game three and is 3-4 with a 4.42 ERA and 50 strikeouts this season. In his career, Sabathia is 17-16 with a 3.63 ERA and 299 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay is 2-5 in their last 7 games overall and 17-7 in Snell’s last 24 starts while the under is 22-5-1 in their last 28 road games against a left-handed starter. New York is 28-10 in Sabathia’s last 38 home starts and 36-17 in their last 53 games overall while the over is 19-7 in their last 26 game three matchups. New York is 11-3 in Sabathia’s last 14 starts against Tampa Bay and 5-1 in Sabathia’s last 6 home starts against the Rays while Tampa Bay is 2-7 in Snell’s last 9 starts against the Yankees.
Both of these pitchers have been touched up a bit lately, Sabathia more so, giving up 18 runs, 16 earned, in his last four starts covering 20.2 innings of work. However, while Snell has had some strong showings against the Yankees already this season, he’s still not up to par with his Cy Young self from a season ago, and the Yankees have easily been the better team in the first two games of the series. I just think the plus money with New York on Wednesday holds some value with the quick turnaround, so I’ll take the Yankees for the sweep here.
