MLB | Houston Astros (21-14) at Oakland Athletics (17-16)
Erik Williams-USA TODAY Sports

Coming up on Monday evening from Coliseum, we’ve got MLB series-opening action between the Houston Astros and the Oakland Athletics.

The Astros just finished a set versus the Diamondbacks. Houston won Friday, lost Saturday, then on Sunday the Astros lost again 3-1 after leaving two runners stranded in the bottom of the ninth.

Houston will be going with LHP Dallas Keuchel on Monday. In his 43.0 innings and 1-5 record this year, Keuchel has a 3.98 ERA with 33 Ks and 12 BBs.

Entering this week, the Astros’ top hitter was Jose Altuve, with 45 hits, 20 runs, two homers and 16 RBI. On Sunday, Altuve slapped a triple.

Over on the A’s side, they’re fresh off a series against Baltimore. Oakland won the first pair of games in that set, then on Monday the A’s finished it up with a 2-1 win.

For the Monday game, Oakland will be rolling with lefty Brett Anderson in the start. Anderson has just one appearance so far this year, working 6.1 innings with five hits and two earned in a no-decision in Seattle.

The top hitter on the A’s roster heading into this week was Jed Lowrie, way out front with 48 hits, 16 runs, eight homers and 31 RBI. On Sunday, Matt Joyce was the only A’s batter with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run.

The Astros are 15-6 in their last 21 Monday games and 41-20 in their last 61 during game one of a series. Houston is also 1-4 in Keuchel’s last five starts and 1-5 in his last six road starts.

Meanwhile, the A’s are 4-1 in their last five Monday games and 1-4 in their last five versus the AL West. The over is 6-0-1 in the A’s last seven during game one of a series and the under is 15-7-1 in their last 23 Monday games.

Overall, Keuchel has been solid for the Astros this year, but he does have a couple of hiccups on his resume—such as six earned on seven hits in 7.0 innings the last time he faced the A’s, which was an 8-1 loss. Houston is a better team and Keuchel is a better pitcher than that however, so I think the odds are that the Astros will manage to pull out a win here.
