The Line: Los Angeles Angels -109 / Oakland Athletics -101 --- Over/Under: 8.5
We have the rubber match of a three game AL West division set from Angel Stadium on Sunday as the Oakland A’s battle the Los Angeles Angels.
The Oakland A’s will look to win the set after evening the series up at one win apiece following a 7-0 shutout win in game two on Saturday. Marcus Semien led the charge, going 3 for 5 with a pair of home runs, a double and four RBIs. Khris Davis added a home run as well with two RBIs and Matt Chapman chipped in a run as well to round out the scoring for Oakland in the win. Stephen Piscotty went 3 for 5 while Jonathan Lucroy went 2 for 4 and Mark Canha and Jed Lowrie each chipped in a base knock to cap off Oakland’s offense in the win. Edwin Jackson got the victory after throwing 7.1 shutout innings, giving up just three hits while striking out six to improve to 4-2 this season. Trevor Cahill will start game three and is 4-2 with a 3.12 ERA and 75 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cahill is 5-3 with a 2.07 ERA and 37 strikeouts against the Angels.
The Los Angeles Angels will look to rebound after being shut out in game two on Saturday, snapping their four game winning streak in the process. Justin Upton and Kaleb Cowart each had a double while Shohei Ohtani, Albert Pujols and Jose Miguel Fernandez each had a base hit as the Angels cranked out just five hits as a team in the loss. Tyler Skaggs took the loss, falling to 8-8 this season after allowing all seven runs on ten hits while striking out five over just 3.1 innings of work. Taylor Cole will get the start in game three and is 0-2 with a 1.59 ERA and 19 strikeouts this season. This will be Cole’s first career start against Oakland.
Oakland is 7-1 in their last 8 division matchups and 5-0 in Cahill’s last 5 starts while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 games overall. Los Angeles is 2-7 in their last 9 Sunday games and 2-6 in their last 8 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 games overall. The over is 24-10-1 in the last 35 meetings between these two teams in Los Angeles.
We are getting near even money with one of the hottest teams in baseball in Oakland, going up against an inconsistent Angels team that is sending Cole to the mound for his first career start. Add in the fact that Oakland has had a lot of success with Cahill on the mound as of late, and I’ll gladly take the low line with the A’s as a gift on Sunday.
