MLB | Los Angeles Angels (76-50) at Oakland Athletics (74-52)

The Oakland A’s and the Los Angeles Angels face off for game one of their series f the top two teams in the AL west and the teams with the two best records in baseball.

The Oakland A’s are heading home from the road where they played their worst baseball of the season. The A’s are 41-22 at home, 2-8 in their last 10 games, and they are coming off of a loss in their last game. As a team the A’s are hitting .249 with Derek Norris hitting .283, Coco Crisp hitting .255, and Josh Donaldson hitting .251. The Oakland pitching staff has an ERA of 3.25 with the starters at 3.47 and the bullpen at 2.82. For game one against the Angels the Athletics start Sonny Gray who has lost his last four starts. For the season Gray has allowed 142 hits and 54 earned runs while striking out 138 over 162.2 innings for a 12-7 record and a 2.99 ERA.

The Los Angeles Angels have to travel back to the West Coast after playing on Thursday Night but they have been red hot. The Angels are 35-27 on the road, 8-2 in their last 10 games, and they have won four games in a row. As a team the Angels are hitting .260 with Kole Calhoun hitting .293, Mike Trout hitting .288, and Albert Pujols hitting .276. The Angels pitching staff has an ERA of 3.61 with the starters at 3.72 and the bullpen at 3.41. For game one against the A’s the Angels start hector Santiago who has no decisions in his last three starts, all games the Angels lost. For the season Santiago has allowed 80 hits and 7 earned runs while striking out 83 over 96.1 innings for a 3-7 record and a 3.46 ERA.

Oakland is 35-16 in their last 51 home games, 2-7 against a left-handed starter, and 7-2 in Gray’s last nine starts as a favorite. Los Angeles is 6-1 in their last seven road games, 38-17 in their last 55 games, and 1-4 in Santiago’s last five starts. Los Angeles is 1-4 in their last five games in Oakland.

The Angels are simply playing the better baseball right now and Gray’s pitching of late doesn’t inspire any confidence so this is a price I can’t pass up on the Angels.
