|Date & Time||Monday September 3, 2018, 4:05 PM (EDT)|
The Line: Oakland Athletics -122 / New York Yankees +112 --- Over/Under: 9
The New York Yankees and the Oakland A’s face off in a potential AL Wild Card preview in game one of a three game set in MLB action on Monday.
The New York Yankees will look to bounce back after settling for a series split with the Detroit Tigers following an 11-7 loss in the series finale on Sunday. Gleyber Torres led the Yanks with two RBIs while Aaron Hicks and Luke Voit each added a solo home run. Miguel Andujar went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI while Gary Sanchez and Neil Walker each added an RBI to round out the Yankees’ offense in the losing effort. Lance Lynn took the loss, falling to 8-10 this season after allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out six over 3.2 innings of work. CC Sabathia will start game one and is 7-5 with a 3.36 ERA and 120 strikeouts this season. In his career, Sabathia is 11-11 with a 4.55 ERA and 163 strikeouts against Oakland.
The Oakland A’s will look to stay hot after salvaging a series split with Seattle after an 8-2 win in the series finale on Sunday. Stephen Piscotty led the charge by going 2 for 3 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs. Marcus Semien added two RBIs and Jed Lowrie added an RBI of his own to round out the scoring for the A’s in the win. Chad Pinder went 3 for 4 with a double while Matt Olson and Matt Chapman each contributed a base hit in the winning effort. Edwin Jackson got the win after allowing just one run on three hits over six innings of work to improve to 5-3 this season while Blake Treinen locked up his 35th save of the season. Trevor Cahill will start game one and is 5-3 with a 3.60 ERA and 89 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cahill is 0-4 with an 11.37 ERA and 16 strikeouts against the Yankees.
New York is 5-2 in Sabathia’s last 7 starts and 11-4 in their last 15 games overall while the under is 21-8-3 in Sabathia’s last 32 road starts. Oakland is 7-2 in Cahill’s last 9 starts and 47-20 in their last 67 games overall while the under is 26-9-5 in Cahill’s last 40 home starts. New York is 0-4 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams in Oakland.
The Yankees at plus money is always tempting considering that you rarely see it, and Cahill has had a ton of issues in his career with New York. However, Cahill hasn’t faced the Yankees since 2011, and the Yankees just struggled to split with Detroit of all teams and now have to fly across the country to Oakland to take on one of the hottest teams in all of baseball. Cahill has struggled in his last two turns, allowing 9 runs, 8 earned in just 8.1 innings, but I think Cahill can take advantage of the situation and get the A’s a crucial win on Monday.
