The Oakland A’s and the Philadelphia Phillies face off on Friday in Oakland for game one of their interleague series.
The Oakland A’s looked to be runaway winners of the AL West earlier this season but it all came unraveled in a hurry as they are now looking at the final Wildcard spot but even that is hanging by a thread. The A’s have lost there last three games and have just fallen apart at the seasms but they are 15 games over .500 at home. Oakland’s .245 team batting average is ranked 20th in baseball with Josh Donaldson leading the way at .255 and Coco Crisp hitting .252. For this important game the A’s go with Jon Lester on the mound who was acquired at the trade deadline from Boston. Lester has a 1.64 ERA in his last three starts and he has a 2.30 ERA since being traded to Oakland but the A’s just haven’t given any of their pitchers much run support.
The Philadelphia Phillies don’t have a ton to play for at this point but they do get a chance to pay the role of spoiler here. The Phillies are 34-40 on the road this season and it should be an offseason of change in Philly. The Phillies .241 batting average ranks 25th in baseball led by Ben revere at .306 and Chase Utley at .271. David Buchanan gets the start for the Phillies and he is 6-7 with a 3.75 Era for the season and his ERA has dropped to 2.20. The Phillies are faced with an aging roster of big contracts and are paying for their success of earlier decades.
Oakland is 5-1 in their last six interleague games against a team with a losing record, 98-45 in their last 143 interleague home games, and 1-6 in their last seven home games. Philadelphia is 7-3 in game one of a series, 0-5 as an underdog, and 1-6 in Buchanan’s last seven starts. Philadelphia is 1-4 in their last five games in Oakland but these teams haven’t played in three years.
The A’s acquired Lester for games like this but I can’t see laying this price on a team like Oakland who is just playing poorly so I will take my chance with he Phillies at the big price.
