The Line: Seattle Mariners -123 / Oakland Athletics +106 -- Over/Under: 8
The Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics meet Wednesday morning in MLB action at the Tokyo Dome.
The Seattle Mariners crashed and burned last year when it came to ending their playoff drought, and now they seem to be taking the rebuilding approach. With a new look roster that includes five new batters in the lineup, no more Robinson Cano or Edwin Diaz, expectations for the Mariners have dropped considerably. The good news is Seattle still has a productive leadoff hitter in Dee Gordon and veterans were added in Jay Bruce and Edwin Encarnacion to possibly soften the blow. Still, the Mariners went from being playoff hopefuls to a team that will likely be buried in the competitive AL West by the summertime in just a years work. The Seattle Mariners Marco Gonzales gets the ball, and he was 13-9 with a 4.00 ERA and 145 strikeouts last season. Gonzales is 1-1 with a 3.72 ERA and 20 strikeouts in his career against the Athletics.
The Oakland Athletics are coming off a playoff appearance last year despite being +700 to make the postseason. The A’s now hope to build on that success and have every chance to do so with one of the more explosive lineups in baseball. Matt Chapman, Matt Olson, Khris Davis, Stephen Piscotty and Jurickson Profar is a wonderful heart of the order and capable of keeping Oakland in the playoff hunt until the very end. The concern for the Oakland Athletics is the starting pitching, especially with Jharel Cotton, Daniel Gossett and Sean Manaea all fresh off surgery. The A’s have the offense and the defense to be a playoff team, but it all comes down to if the pitching staff can hold up. Mike Fiers gets the ball, and he was 12-8 with a 3.56 ERA and 139 strikeouts last season. Fiers is 2-1 with a 6.28 ERA and 34 strikeouts in his career against the Mariners.
The Mariners are 2-5 in their last 7 during game 1 of a series, 2-5 in their last 7 games on fieldturf and 1-7 in Gonzales' last 8 starts. The Athletics are 9-4 in their last 13 vs. American League West, 63-30 in their last 93 overall and 8-1 in Fiers' last 9 starts. The over is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings. The over is 20-7-1 in Athletics last 28 overall. The over is 7-3 in Gonzales' last 10 starts overall.
The Seattle Mariners are a completely different team from a year ago and don't have the depth or the firepower they had to make up for some of their weaknesses. The A's had a ton of success with Fiers on the mound in the second half of the season, and he has a lot of run support to back him up. It's almost like Fiers has new life when he's pitching on a team with expectations and thrives on playing meaningful baseball. Games in weird locations can produce random results, but the Oakland Athletics are the clear better team across the board and should be able to get the job done. We're getting plus money with the better team, which is always a nice way to start the new season.
