Oakland Athletics -170 / Seattle Mariners +156
The Seattle Mariners and the Oakland A’s meet in game one of a three game AL West division series in MLB action from Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Tuesday night.
The Seattle Mariners will look to rebound after being swept by the Los Angeles Angels to start the second half after a 6-3 loss in the series finale on Sunday. Domingo Santana and Austin Nola each had a solo home run while Tom Murphy had an RBI of his own to finish off Seattle’s scoring as a team in the loss. Mallex Smith had a triple and Dylan Moore contributed a double while Dee Gordon, Kyle Seager and Tim Beckham each contributed base hits as well in the defeat. Yusei Kikuchi gave up three runs on two hits while striking out three and walking four over four innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Anthony Bass took the loss, falling to 1-3 on the year in relief. Marco Gonzales will start game one and is 10-7 with a 4.24 ERA and 82 strikeouts this season. In his career, Gonzales is 4-1 with a 3.12 ERA and 33 strikeouts against Oakland.
The Oakland A’s will look to build some steam after sweeping the Chicago White Sox to start the second half following a 3-2 win in the series finale on Sunday. Ramon Laureano had a solo home run and Matt Chapman added an RBI while Mark Canha went 2 for 4 at the dish in the win. Matt Olson, Chad Pinder and Franklin Barreto each chipped in hits as well in the victory. Brett Anderson allowed two runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Liam Hendriks got the win to improve to 4-0 in relief on the year. Daniel Mengden will start game one and is 4-1 with a 4.72 ERA and 31 strikeouts this season. In his career, Mengden is 1-2 with a 5.20 ERA and 21 strikeouts against Seattle.
Seattle is 5-1 in Gonzales’ last 6 starts and 9-28 in their last 37 road games while the under is 9-4-1 in their last 14 games overall. Oakland is 4-0 in Mengden’s last 4 division starts and 20-7 in their last 27 games overall while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games following a win. Seattle is 5-1 in Gonzales’ last 6 starts against Oakland.
I understand Oakland being favored here because they’re the better team along with the fact that Mengden has won his last three starts for the A’s, including a victory at Seattle last time out. However, the A’s have yet to figure Gonzales out this season, as Seattle’s top guy has gone 3-0 against Oakland this season, giving up just six runs in 21 innings. Gonzales’ ERA also goes down nearly two and a half runs on the road so while this isn’t a game I’d touch, I think if Seattle’s going to steal a game, this would be it so give me the plus money here.
