MLB | Boston Red Sox (9-7) at Baltimore Orioles (7-8)
USA TODAY Sports

The Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox face off on Friday at Camden yards for game one of their MLB series of American League East teams.

The Baltimore Orioles return home from a tough road trip in last place in the AL East. The Orioles have lost their last four games, are 3-3 at home, and are two games back in the division standings. As a team the Orioles are hitting .271 with Adam Jones hitting .424, Caleb Joseph hitting .333, and Travis Snider hitting .304. The Orioles pitching staff has an ERA of 4.98 with the starters at 5.30 and the bullpen at 4.55. For game one against the Red Sox the Orioles start Miguel Gonzalez who beat Boston in his last start and for the season has allowed 12 hits and five runs while striking out 20 over 17.2 innings for a 2-1 record and a 2.55 ERA.

The Boston Red Sox are part of a three-way tie for first place in the AL East as they play their second series in a row on the road. The Red Sox are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 5-4 on the road, and they have lost their last two games. As a team the Red Sox are hitting .238 with Xander Bogaerts hitting .302, Pablo Sandoval hitting .263, and Hanley Ramirez hitting .263. The Red Sox pitching staff has an ERA of 4.44 with the starters at 5.71 and the bullpen at 2.64. For game one at Baltimore the Red Sox start Rick Porcello who was bombed by the Orioles in his last start and for the season he has allowed 22 hits and 14 earned runs while striking out 16 over 19 innings for a 1-2 record and a 6.63 ERA.

Baltimore is 36-15 in their last 51 home games, 0-4 in game one of a series, and 21-9 in Gonzalez’s last 30 home starts. Boston is 5-0 in game one of a series, 6-1 as an underdog, and 4-1 as a road underdog. Baltimore is 5-2 in Gonzalez’s last seven starts against Boston.

While Gonzalez blew away Boston last time out and Porcello was shelled, I am less confident in the overall Orioles pitching staff so while I give them the nod here, it’s a lean.

Pick:
Baltimore Orioles -114
