The New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies will meet up on the MLB diamond to finish up their series on Thursday.
The Phillies took the first two games of this set, 13-7 on Monday and 7-5 Tuesday. In the Wednesday game, Philly did it again with a 10-inning, 5-4 win in walk-off style.
For Thursday’s finale, the Mets will be sending out Zack Wheeler for the start. In his 101.2 innings and 6-5 record this year, Wheeler has a 4.69 ERA with 108 Ks and 29 BBs.
New York out-hit Philadelphia 10-9 in the Wednesday game but couldn't finish it off. Tops in hitting for New York there was Dominic Smith, with a homer, three hits and two runs.
Over on the Phillies’ side, they’re going with Aaron Nola in the start Thursday. Across 89.0 innings and a 6-2 mark so far, Nola has a 4.55 ERA with 100 Ks and 37 BBs.
Philadelphia had four hitters with two knocks apiece in the Wednesday victory. Leading the way was Jean Segura, with two hits, a homer and three RBI.
The Mets are 4-1 in Wheeler’s last five starts with four days’ rest and 5-2 in his last seven starts. New York is 2-5 in Wheeler’s last seven road starts and 11-5 in his last 16 versus the NL East.
Meanwhile, the Phillies are 2-5 in their last seven in game four of a series and 1-5 in the last six Thursday games. Philly is 5-1 in Nola’s last six Thursday starts and 25-10 in his last 35 home starts.
Wheeler had a couple of bad road starts this month, posting nine earned in a span of 10.2 innings versus Atlanta and New York—both losses. He bounced back with 7.0 innings and one earned his last time up though.
As for Nola, he’s had a couple missteps this month as well but does have two quality starts in his last three games. He hasn’t won yet in June, however.
This one is something of a coin-flip matchup, so I’m going with the Phillies at home in the finale.
