The Line: Philadelphia Phillies +190 / New York Yankees -210 --- Over/Under: 7.5
The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies meet in game two of their three game interleague set in MLB action from Citizen’s Bank Park on Tuesday.
The New York Yankees will be looking to build some steam after snapping a three game losing skid with a 4-2 win over Philly in game one on Monday. Giancarlo Stanton led the Bronx Bombers by going 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Aaron Judge went 2 for 4 with a solo home run and Gleyber Torres added an RBI double to round out the New York scoring in the win. Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius each added a base hit as well to round out New York’s offense in the winning effort. Jonathan Loaisiga improved to 2-0, getting the win after throwing 5.1 shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out eight. Aroldis Chapman picked up the save despite giving up a home run in the 9th inning, striking out three. Luis Severino will start game two and is 11-2 with a 2.24 ERA and 123 strikeouts this season. This will be Severino’s first career start against Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia Phillies will look to rebound after dropping game one on Monday. Scott Kingery had an RBI single and Maikel Franco had a consolation solo home run in the bottom of the 9th off of Aroldis Chapman, but it was too little too late as the Yankees got the win. Jorge Alfaro was the only other Philadelphia player to pick up a base hit as the Phillies mustered up just three hits as a team in the losing effort. Vince Velasquez took the loss after giving up two runs on three hits while walking four and striking out seven over six innings of work, falling to 5-8 on the year. Jake Arrieta will start game two and is 5-5 with a 3.42 ERA and 54 strikeouts this season. In his career, Arrieta is 3-1 with a 3.83 ERA and 42 strikeouts against the Yankees.
New York is 6-1 in Severino’s last 7 interleague starts 41-16 in their last 57 games overall while the under is 9-1 in their last 10 road games. Philadelphia is 3-7 in Arrieta’s last 10 starts and 4-10 in their last 14 interleague home games while the over is 9-4 in their last 13 games overall. New York is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Philadelphia.
Heavy plus money at home with Arrieta is tempting, considering that he’s had some success in his career against the Yankees and at home Arrieta is 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 38 strikeouts this season. However, the Yankees have had a ton of success with Severino on the bump and in his career, Severino is 5-1 with a 1.07 ERA in interleague play. The problem with backing the Yankees is that I need to see that they’ve fully got their offense back as they’ve played some close games lately with Severino on the hill. Given the pitching matchup, I’d say the best bet if for the under to hit in this matchup.
