The Line: Philadelphia Phillies -114 / Washington Nationals +104 --- Over/Under: 9
The Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies will be continuing their MLB set in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Tuesday from Citizens Bank Park.
The Monday opener of this set was cancelled due to wet conditions on the field from heavy rainfall. That game will be played Tuesday afternoon (weather permitting) just before this game.
For Tuesday’s evening matchup, the Nats will be sending out Tanner Roark. In his 170.1 innings and 8-15 mark this year, Roark has a 4.23 ERA with 141 Ks.
Leading the way for the Nats offense is Trea Turner, who comes into this set on 157 hits, 89 runs, 17 homers and 61 RBI. Anthony Rendon is second with 136 hits, 72 runs, 19 homers and 71 RBI.
Over on the Phillies’ side, they’re rolling with Nick Pivetta on Tuesday. Across 145.0 innings and a 7-11 record, Pivetta has a 4.66 ERA with 172 Ks.
Tops in hitting for the Phillies this season is Cesar Hernandez, with 137 hits, 82 runs, 11 homers and 48 RBI coming into this series. Odubel Herrera has 131 hits, 60 runs, 21 homers and 65 RBI.
The Nats are 3-8 in Roark’s last 11 starts in game two of a series and 3-9 in his last 12 starts versus the NL East. The over is 4-0 in Washington’s last four game twos of a series and the under is 8-3-1 in Roark’s last 12 road starts.
Meanwhile, the Phillies are 1-5 in their last six in game two of a series and 3-7 in Pivetta’s last 10 starts with five days’ rest. Philly is 1-4 in Pivetta’s last five starts and 1-6 in his last seven starts in game two of a series.
This will be Roark’s fifth start versus the Phillies this year, so we’ve got a good idea of how he pitches against them these days. In those four, Roark is 0-3 with a 4.58 ERA. That said, Pivetta hasn’t shown much lately and doesn’t have a quality start in nearly a month. I have to go with the Nats here but it could be a messy game scoreboard-wise. The over sounds good, too.
