The Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet in game one of a three game set in MLB action from PNC Park on Tuesday.
The Atlanta Braves will look to build some steam after winning their series with Detroit over the weekend, taking the rubber match on Sunday by a final score of 7-4. Dansby Swanson led the Braves by going 2 for 3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs while Charlie Culberson had an RBI with a pinch-hit triple. Freddie Freeman and Ozzie Albies each had an RBI with Freeman adding a double while Julio Teheran and Matt Joyce each added an RBI as well in the win. Ronald Acuna Jr. chipped in a base knock of his own to cap off Atlanta’s offense in victory. Teheran threw five shutout innings, giving up just four hits while striking out six, not factoring in the decision. Touki Toussaint ended up with the win to improve to 3-0 this season. Max Fried will start game one and is 7-3 with a 3.19 ERA and 56 strikeouts this season. This will be Fried’s first career start against Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to bounce back after losing their series with the Brewers, dropping the series finale on Sunday by a final score of 4-2. Kevin Newman and Josh Bell each had an RBI to round out Pittsburgh’s scoring as a team in the loss, with Bell adding a double. Bryan Reynolds went 2 for 4 with a double and Colin Moran and Adam Frazier each added a two-bagger as well while Starling Marte, Melky Cabrera and Jacob Stallings each had base hits of their own in the losing effort. Jordan Lyles took the loss, falling to 5-3 on the year after allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five over six innings of work. Steven Brault will start game one and is 2-1 with a 5.87 ERA and 26 strikeouts this season. This will be Brault’s first career start against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 4-1 in Fried’s last 5 road starts and 8-2 in their last 10 road games while the over is 4-0-1 in their last 5 games overall. Pittsburgh is 4-0 in Brault’s last 4 starts and 1-6 in their last 7 home games while the over is 8-1 in their last 9 games against a team with a winning record. Atlanta is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
Pittsburgh at home would be worth a look given that Brault just threw 5.1 shutout innings in his last start. However, the Pirates are starting to lose steam, and are starting to get exposed in different facets of their game. The Bucs can’t score in low-scoring games, and can’t keep runs off of the board in a shootout. Fried has been arguably the best starter for the Braves this season, and should be able to lock up another victory in game one so I’ll side with the Braves to draw first blood on Tuesday.
