The Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet in the rubber match of their three game set in MLB action from PNC Park on Thursday.
The Atlanta Braves will look to win the set after dropping game two on Wednesday by a final score of 7-4. Dansby Swanson went 2 for 4 with a solo home run and a double while Ronald Acuna Jr. added a solo home run of his own in the losing effort. Nick Markakis had a double and an RBI while Austin Riley chipped in an RBI of his own to finish off Atlanta’s scoring in the defeat. Josh Donaldson added a double of his own as the Braves cranked out just six hits as a team. Kevin Gausman took the loss, falling to 2-5 on the year after allowing all seven runs on 12 hits while striking out three over five innings of work. Mike Foltynewicz will start game three and is 1-4 with a 6.10 ERA and 32 strikeouts this season. In his career, Foltynewicz is 1-3 with a 6.88 ERA and 11 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to win the set after taking game two on Wednesday. Elias Diaz had a home run and two RBIs while Colin Moran went 2 for 4 with a solo home run and a double. Gregory Polanco, Starling Marte and Josh Bell each had a double and an RBI with Polanco and Marte each adding three hits. Joe Musgrove went 2 for 4 at the plate while Kevin Newman chipped in a base hit of his own to round off Pittsburgh’s offense in the victory. Musgrove got the win to improve to 3-6 on the year after allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six over eight innings of work. Chris Archer will start game three and is 2-5 with a 5.66 ERA and 47 strikeouts this season. In his career, Archer is 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA and 8 strikeouts against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 1-8 in Foltynewicz’s last 9 starts and 5-2 in their last 7 road games while the over is 6-0-1 in their last 7 games overall. Pittsburgh is 1-6 in Archer’s last 7 starts and 6-16 in their last 22 home games while the over is 4-0 in Archer’s last 4 starts against a team with a winning record. Atlanta is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams and 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Pittsburgh.
It’s genuinely hard to pick a side as Atlanta is the better team and Pittsburgh has been brutal at home, but I got burned with the Braves on Wednesday and Folty hasn’t been good so far this season. Instead of trying to figure out a winner here, I’m going to side with the over. Foltynewicz has allowed four or more runs in five of his seven starts this season and has a paltry ERA just under seven against Pittsburgh in his career, while Archer has allowed four or more runs in four of his last five starts. This is another game that I could see the teams combining for double-digits, so I’ll take my chances on the over.
