The Chicago Cubs conclude their series at PNC Park with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
All I can say about the Chicago Cubs is that right now I can see improvement however what I don’t know is whether the improvement is long term. The bats saved the pitching in a 9-8 win Tuesday with lefty Travis Wood getting a no decision with three runs plated in five frames before Brian Schlitter gave up two with Jason Motte allowing three more. The Cubs racked up 12 hits and four walks with Starlin Castro going 3-5 with a homer and four RBI’s while Welington Castillo went deep and drove in two while Kris Bryan also knocked in a pair. Jason Hammel gets the start in the finale’ at Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Hammel did not get a decision in a 5-4 defeat to visiting San Diego with all four runs allowed on seven hits and a BB over 6.1 frames.
The Pittsburgh Pirates might be a challenger in the National League Central but something doesn’t seem right with the team right now. Starter Francisco Liriano gave up three runs and walked two with nine strikeouts through five frames for a no decision. Mark Melancon absorbed the lost and blew the save in the 9th with three runs scored. The Pirates did their damage on nine hits and four bases on balls with Josh Harrison going solo with Starling Marte going deep and knocking in two. Jung-ho Kang and Francisco Cervelli posted two hits each and combined for five RBI’s. Vance Worley gets the ball for the third time when he faces the Chicago Cubs. Worley comes off a strong outing in a 6-2 victory versus Milwaukee where he gave up two runs on six hits and four walks in six innings.
Chicago are 6-2 in their 8 games as an underdog with the over going 8-3-1 in their last 12 games. Pittsburgh are 35-16 in their last 51 home games with the under going 6-2 in Worley’s last 8 on grass and 6-2 in Worley’s last 8 starts overall. The Cubs are 2-7 in the last 9 meetings. After watching the Pirates muddle around so far and my dislike in betting Cubs games I’ll throw this out there…
