Pittsburgh Pirates +106 / Chicago Cubs -116 O/U: 9.5
The Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates will match up on the MLB diamond Tuesday to continue their series.
In the Monday opener of this set, we had an offensive explosion in an 18-5 beatdown Pittsburgh victory. The Pirates put up a whopping 23 hits there.
For Tuesday’s game, the Cubs will be sending out Kyle Hendricks in the start. Across his 88.1 innings and 7-5 record this year, Hendricks has a 3.36 ERA with 75 Ks and 16 BBs.
Chicago was down 7-1 after just two innings on Monday, despite an eventual 13 hits as a team. The Cubs’ Javier Baez posted a solo homer there, and Anthony Rizzo doubled with a run.
Over on the Pirates’ side, they’re going with Joe Musgrove in the start Tuesday. Over 90.2 innings and a 6-7 record so far, Musgrove has a 4.27 ERA with 74 Ks and 22 BBs.
Pittsburgh scored in all but one inning on Monday, and the offense was on fire the entire game. Two players had five hits apiece (Colin Moran and Adam Frazier), and the two combined for five runs and four RBI on the night.
The Cubs are 1-4 in their last five Tuesday games and 7-2 in Hendricks’ last nine starts. Chicago is 3-7 in Hendricks’ last 10 Tuesday starts and 8-3 in his last 11 versus the NL Central.
Meanwhile, Pitt is 0-6 in their last six Tuesday games and 1-4 in Musgrove’s last five starts versus the NL Central. The Pirates are 4-1 in Musgrove’s last five Tuesday starts and the over is 7-1 in their last eight overall.
Hendricks was cruising along pretty well in early June, with four straight quality starts. He hit some stumbling blocks his last time up though (4.1 innings; five earned) and is coming off a shoulder issue.
As for Musgrove, he’s got consecutive quality starts going, with 13.0 innings and one earned in that pair. This should be a good mound matchup, but assuming Hendricks is fully healthy I have to go Cubs here.
