The Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet in game three of their four game NL Central division set from PNC Park in MLB action on Wednesday.
The Chicago Cubs will look to get on the board with a win after dropping the first two games of the set including a 5-1 loss in game two on Tuesday. Willson Contreras had a double and an RBI to round out the Cubs’ scoring in the loss while Addison Russell added a double of his own. Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Jason Heyward and Albert Almora Jr. each chipped in a base hit to finish off Chicago’s offense as the Cubbies had just six hits as a team in the losing effort. Kyle Hendricks took the loss, falling to 7-6 on the year after giving up two runs on four hits while striking out four over three innings of work. Yu Darvish will start game three and is 2-4 with a 4.98 ERA and 105 strikeouts this season. In his career, Darvish is 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA and 17 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to win the series and push for a sweep in the series finale on Thursday after taking game two on Tuesday. Adam Frazier led the charge, falling a triple short of the cycle by going 4 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs while Starling Marte had a double while going 2 for 4 with an RBI. Josh Bell added an RBI of his own to finish off Pittsburgh’s scoring as a team in the win while Steven Brault added a base hit as the three Pirates combined for all seven hits as a team in the win. Joe Musgrove threw three shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four, not factoring in the decision. Clay Holmes got the win to improve to 1-0 on the year after two perfect innings of relief. Chris Archer will start game three and is 3-6 with a 5.50 ERA and 80 strikeouts this season. In his career, Archer is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA and 29 strikeouts against the Cubs.
Chicago is 1-5 in their last 6 road games and 2-6 in their last 8 games overall while the under is 3-0-1 in Darvish’s last 4 starts overall. Pittsburgh is 5-1 in Archer’s last 6 starts and 6-0 in their last 6 home games while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 division games. The under is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings between these two teams and 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Pittsburgh.
Darvish has been a better pitcher on the road than at home this season, but the issue is that he’s allowed nine runs in his last 11 innings across two starts and control remains an issue. Archer has had ups and downs of his own, but his ERA is a full four runs lower at home than on the road, and while his record doesn’t show it, the Pirates have won five of Archer’s last six starts. The Pirates are also simply the team in much better form than the Cubs right now, so I’ll side with the Pirates for another victory on Wednesday.
