The Line: Pittsburgh Pirates -138 / Cincinnati Reds +128 --- Over/Under: 7
The Pittsburgh Pirates look to avoid getting swept by the Cincinnati Reds at PNC Park Thursday.
The Cincinnati Reds have been a bit inconsistent thus far and need to string some wins together to chase down division St Louis. Perhaps the Reds are on the verge of a hot streak with Wednesday’s 3-0 win at PNC Park for consecutive victories. Starter Mike Leake was on the top of his game with a six hit shutout over eight frames with zero walks to improve to 2-1. The Reds mustered ten hits and walked twice with Marlon Byrd going 2-4 with his 5th homer while Brandon Phillips was 3-4 with an RBI and run. Anthony DeSclafani opposes Pittsburgh for the second time in 2015. DeSclafani defeated the Pirates in his season opener 3-2 with both runs plated on five hits and a walk over six frames.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are struggling to find the groove right now and it’s showing up in the loss column. The Pirates slide reached five games with Wednesday’s home loss to Cincinnati where neither the arms or the bats were able to put up a fight. Starter Gerrit Cole fell to 4-1 with all three runs plated on eight hits and a pair of bases on balls through five frames. Three relievers tossed four scoreless innings but the damage was done with no help coming from the offense. The bats produced seven hits with Jung-ho Kang going 2-4 with a double but big hits were not on the menu. The Pirates send AJ Burnett to the bump looking to avoid the sweep by Cincinnati on Thursday. Burnett did not get a decision in a 2-1 loss at St Louis with six shutout innings with two hits and three BB allowed.
Cincinnati are 2-6 in their last 8 games as an underdog and are 15-37 in their last 52 road games while the under is 7-3-1 in their last 11 road games. The over is 5-1-2 in Pittsburgh last 8 home games while the under is 6-2-2 in their last 10 overall and is 6-2-2 in their last 10 on grass. The under is 5-2-1 in Burnett’s last 8 starts vs. Cincinnati while the Reds are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in Pittsburgh. I don’t really love this one especially when I’m taking the Pirates…
