The Line: Pittsburgh Pirates -140 / Cincinnati Reds +130 --- Over/Under: 7.5
The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds face off on Saturday at PNC Park for game two of their series.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are still in the race for a post-season spot and they helped their cause on Friday beating the Reds. Josh Harrison had three hits, Jose Tabata had two hits, and Andrew McCutchen had a hit as the Pirates scored two runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Edinson Volquez allowed three hits and a run while striking out six over 7.2 innings to not factor in the decision as Tony Watson picked up the win to raise his record to 10-1 for the season and Mark Melancon earned his 25th save. For Saturday’s game the Pirates start Vance Worley who has lost his last three starts. For the season Worley has allowed 87 hits and 28 earned runs while striking out 56 over 80.1 innings for a 5-4 record and a 3.14 ERA.
The Cincinnati Reds have struggled in the second half of the season and the struggles continued as they took the loss on Friday. Devin Mesoraco had two hits and Billy Hamilton and Jay Bruce each had hits as the Reds scored one run on four hits. Starting pitcher Mike Leake allowed six hits over 7.0 scoreless innings to not get a decision as Jonathan Broxton blew he save and took the loss. For Saturday’s game the Reds start Alfredo Simon who has had a huge drop off since the All Star Game. For the season Simon has allowed 147 hits and 58 earned runs while striking out 100 over 160.1 innings for a 13-8 record and a 3.26 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 7-2 in their last nine games, 6-2 against the NL Central, and 5-1 in Worley’s last six starts as a favorite. Cincinnati is 5-13 in their last 18 games, 2-19 in their last 24 road games, and 1-7 in Simon’s last eight starts. Cincinnati is 7-4 in their last 11 games against Pittsburgh.
This should be another tight one but the Pirates are the better team right now and they are the play here.
