The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds face off on Sunday at PNC Park as they close out their series.
The Pittsburgh Pirates continued to stay relevant in the NL post-season race and they knocked off the Reds on Saturday. Neil Walker hit a home run and Josh Harrison and Russell Martin each had hits as the Pirates scored three runs on four hits. Starting pitcher Vance Worley allowed three hits and two runs while striking out four over 6.1 innings to get the win and raise his record to 6-4 and Mark Melancon earned his 26th save. For Sunday’s game the Pirates start Francisco Liriano who has lost his last three decisions. For the season Liriano has allowed 107 hits and 55 earned runs while striking out 135 over 124.1 innings for a 3-10 record and a 3.98 ERA.
The Cincinnati Reds continued their skid as they fell to the Pirates on Saturday. Billy Hamilton, Todd Frazier, and Brayan Pena each had hits as the Reds scored two runs on three hits. Starting pitcher Alfredo Simon allowed four hits and three runs while striking out seven over 7.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 13-9 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Reds start Johnny Cueto who has lost his last two starts. For the season Cueto has allowed 136 hits and 50 earned runs while striking out 199 over 199 innings for a 15-8 record and a 2.26 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 7-2 in their last nine games, 6-2 against the NL Central, and 2-6in Liriano’s last eight starts. Cincinnati is 5-13 in their last 18 games, 5-19 in their last 24 road games, and 11-4 in Cueto’s last 15 starts. Cincinnati is 7-4 in the last 11 meetings of these two.
