The Oakland A’s and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet in game one of a three game weekend interleague set from PNC Park on Friday night.
The Oakland A’s will be out to snap a 6-game losing streak after being swept for the second straight series, falling to Boston by a final score of 7-3 on Wednesday. Khris Davis and Chad Pinder each went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI while Ramon Laureano added an RBI as well in the losing effort. Matt Chapman went 2 for 4 with a double as well to round out Oakland’s offense as a team in the loss. Mike Fiers took the loss, falling to 2-3 on the year after allowing three runs on five hits over five innings of work. Brett Anderson will start game one and is 3-2 with a 4.35 ERA and 18 strikeouts this season. In his career, Anderson is 2-1 with a 3.10 ERA and 12 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to keep the momentum going after pulling off the two game sweep of Texas, including a 7-5 win in the series finale on Wednesday. Bryan Reynolds had a double and three RBIs while Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco each had a double and an RBI. Melky Cabrera went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Elias Diaz added an RBI as well in the win. Josh Bell chipped in a double as well to cap off the Pirates’ offense as a team in the winning effort. Jameson Taillon got the win to improve to 2-3 after allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits while striking out five over 6.1 innings of work. Felipe Vazquez closed out the 9th for his 8th save of the season. Joe Musgrove will start game one and is 1-2 with a 1.54 ERA and 31 strikeouts this season. In his career, Musgrove is 1-1 with a 1.33 ERA and 20 strikeouts against Oakland.
Oakland is 0-7 in their last 7 road games and 1-8 in Anderson’s last 9 road starts while the under is 10-1 in their last 11 interleague games against a right-handed starter. Pittsburgh is 2-8 in their last 10 games overall and 4-1 in Musgrove’s last 5 home starts while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games following a win. Oakland is 0-4 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
The A’s and the plus money is worth a look considering that the A’s are due for a turnaround performance and want to snap this brutal losing streak. However, Oakland hasn’t been very good on the road for the last little bit and they haven’t had any luck with Anderson on the mound on the road for even longer. Pittsburgh found some mojo with their two game sweep of the Rangers and Musgrove has been one of their better arms this season so I’ll lay the juice with Pittsburgh in this spot.
