The Philadelphia Phillies and the Pittsburgh Pirates will match up on the MLB diamond Friday to kick off their series.

The Phillies are coming out of a series versus the Dodgers. Philadelphia fell 16-2 in the opener, then got a 9-8 win on Tuesday before falling again 7-2 Wednesday. In the Thursday finale, Philly eked one out 7-6.

For Friday’s game, Philadelphia will send out Jake Arrieta in the start. Over his 113.0 innings and 8-7 record so far, Arrieta has a 4.54 ERA with 87 Ks and 42 BBs.

Over on the Pirates’ side, they played the Cardinals this week. Pittsburgh managed a 3-1 win on Tuesday in that set, but fell 7-0 Monday and 6-5 Wednesday to drop the series.

Pittsburgh will be sending out Jordan Lyles in the start Friday. This year, Lyles has 75.0 innings, a 5-6 record, a 5.16 ERA, 80 Ks and 31 BBs.

The Phillies are 3-7 in their last 10 in game one of a series and 1-4 in their last five Friday games. Philly is 4-0 in Arrieta’s last four starts with four days’ rest and 5-2 in his last seven starts.

Meanwhile, the Pirates are 5-14 in their last 19 in game one of a series and 5-1 in Lyles’ last six starts with five days’ rest. Pittsburgh is 0-6 in Lyles’ last last six starts and 0-5 in his last five versus a team with a winning record.

Arrieta had a few rough starts last month (14 earned in 16.1 innings; still a 2-1 record), but came out with a nice game in his last appearance with 5.0 innings and one earned.

As for Lyles, he’s 0-5 in his last six starts and has given up 14 earned runs in just 4.2 innings over his last pair. Considering his recent struggles, I’m going to side with the Phillies in this one.
