The San Diego Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates will match up on the MLB diamond to kick off their series Friday.

San Diego is coming off a set against the Brewers. The Padres were able to sweep that series, winning 2-0 Monday, 4-1 Tuesday and 8-7 on Wednesday.

For Friday’s outing, the Padres are sending out Eric Lauer in the start. Across his 74.1 innings and 5-6 record this year, Lauer has a 4.60 ERA with 59 Ks and 22 BBs.

Over on the Pirates’ side, they’re fresh off a two-game set with the Tigers. Pittsburgh fell 5-4 in the Tuesday game but was able to split with an 8-7 Wednesday win.

In the Friday game, the Pirates will be sending out Joe Musgrove in the start. Over his 77.2 innings and 4-7 record this year, Musgrove has a 4.87 ERA with 61 Ks and 22 BBs.

The Padres are 7-3 in the last 10 in game one of a series and 2-5 in Lauer’s last seven Friday starts. San Diego is 4-0 in their last four overall and 14-5 in their last 19 after an off day.

Meanwhile, the Pirates are 16-35 in their last 51 versus the NL West and 5-11 in their last 16 home games. Pittsburgh is 1-8 in their last nine after a win and 1-4 in Musgrove’s last five home starts.

Lauer had a run of three quality starts in four tries going, but he faltered with five earned on 10 hits in 2.2 innings in Colorado his last time up.

As for Musgrove, he’s been very sketchy as of late, and put up six earned in 4.0 innings on nine hits in Atlanta during his last start.

I trust Musgrove a little less than I do Lauer these days, so I’ll take the lesser of two evils in the Padres here for the opener.
