The San Francisco Giants and the Pittsburgh Pirates square off in game two of their three game set from PNC Park in MLB action on Saturday.
The San Francisco Giants will look to bounce back after losing five straight games, including an 11-2 beatdown at the hands of the Pirates in the series opener on Friday. Austin Jackson accounted for both San Francisco runs in the loss, while Gregor Blanco and Buster Posey each added two hits, with Posey adding a double. Andrew McCutchen added a double of his own in his first game back in Pittsburgh since being traded to the Giants, while Evan Longoria, Brandon Crawford and Alen Hanson each added base hits as well in the loss. Andrew Suarez took the loss, falling to 1-1 this season after allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out five over four innings of work. Jeff Samardzija will start game two and is 1-2 with a 6.62 ERA and 15 strikeouts this season. In his career, Samardzija is 6-4 with a 2.80 ERA and 95 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to stay hot after pushing their winning streak to four games with the win on Friday. Max Moroff led the Buccos with three RBIs, going 2 for 5 with a home run, while Starling Marte, Josh Bell and Jose Osuna all had two RBIs and a home run. Jordy Mercer went 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI, while Colin Moran added an RBI of his own to round out the scoring for Pittsburgh in the win, putting up a pinch-hit RBI double. Sean Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with a double and Gregory Polanco added a two-bagger of his own, while Francisco Cervelli chipped in a base knock to cap off the offense for Pittsburgh in the win. Jameson Taillon lasted just three innings before leaving the game due to a finger laceration. Steven Brault got the win to improve to 3-1 this season despite giving up both San Francisco runs. Chad Kuhl will start game two and is 4-2 with a 4.12 ERA and 36 strikeouts this season. In his career, Kuhl is 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 3 strikeouts against San Francisco.
San Francisco is 0-5 in their last 5 games overall and 2-6 in Samardzija’s last 8 starts while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 games against the NL Central. Pittsburgh is 8-2 in Kuhl’s last 10 home starts and 5-1 in their last 6 games overall while the over is 4-1-1 in their last 6 games overall. San Francisco is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Pittsburgh.
The Giants have had the bulk of the success between these two teams, especially at PNC Park. However, this is a story of two teams heading in completely different directions since the start of the week, with the Giants losing five straight and the Pirates winners in four straight and five of six. Having Samardzija has done more harm than good for San Fran, giving up five or more runs in two of his last three starts while Kuhl had been very good at home so I’ll lay the juice with the hotter team in the Pirates on Saturday.
