Pittsburgh Pirates -105 / St. Louis Cardinals -105 O/U: 9.5
The St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates will match up on the MLB circuit to continue their series Wednesday.
In Monday’s game, the Cardinals eked out a 6-5 win. On Tuesday St. Louis did it again 4-3.
On Wednesday, the Cardinals will send out Adam Wainwright in the start. Across 98.0 innings and a 6-7 record this year, Wainwright has a 4.50 ERA with 93 Ks and 37 BBs.
The Cards posted seven hits on Tuesday. Paul Goldschmidt was a notable contributor on a two-run homer in the third.
Over on the Pirates’ side, they’re sending out Jordan Lyles for the start Wednesday. Over 80.2 innings and a 5-6 mark so far, Lyles has a 4.91 ERA with 87 Ks and 32 BBs.
The Pirates posted just six hits on Tuesday and couldn’t score outside of the first inning. Pittsburgh’s only two-hit batter was Adam Frazier, who also had a run.
The Cardinals are 11-4 in Wainwright’s last 15 Wednesday starts and 41-15 in his last 56 starts with four days’ rest. St. Louis is 52-24 in Wainwright’s last 76 starts in game three of a series and 42-18 in his last 60 road starts versus a team with a losing record.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 5-2 in their last seven Wednesday games and 1-4 in Lyles’ last five starts with four days’ rest. Pitt is 0-7 in Lyles’ last seven starts and 0-6 in his last six versus the NL Central.
Wainwright had a few pretty good starts this month, with two quality outings in a three-start span totaling 18.2 innings. That said, Wainwright coughed up seven earned in 3.1 innings his last time up.
As for Lyles, he had two starts with 14 earned in 4.2 innings but calmed down his last time out with one earned in 5.2 innings. He hasn’t won since May 23, though.
I’m not super-confident in Wainwright these days, but he’s probably the better option here. I’m going Cardinals.
