Pittsburgh Pirates -135 / Texas Rangers +115 -- O/U: 8.5
The Texas Rangers and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet in the opener of a mini two-game interleague set from PNC Park in MLB action on Tuesday night.
The Texas Rangers will look to keep the ball rolling after winning their series with Toronto, taking the series finale by a final score of 10-2 on Sunday. Asdrubal Cabrera went 2 for 4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs while Rougned Odor had a homer and three RBIs. Elvis Andrus added two RBIs while Shin-Soo Choo went 3 for 4 with an RBI. Jeff Mathis and Danny Santana each had a double while Nomar Mazara and Joey Gallo each had base hits as well in the victory. Drew Smyly gave up one run on two hits while striking out five over four innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Kyle Dowdy got the win to improve to 2-1 on the year. Adrian Sampson will start game one and is 0-1 with a 3.58 ERA and 19 strikeouts this season. This will be Sampson’s second career start against Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will also look to keep their momentum going after winning 4 of their last 5 games including their series with Oakland, taking the series finale by a final score of 5-3. Starling Marte had the walk-off game-winning home run, going 2 for 5 with three RBIs. Adam Frazier added a double and an RBI while going 2 for 6. Colin Moran had an RBI to round out Pittsburgh’s scoring as a team in the win while Josh Bell added a double. Melky Cabrera, Elias Diaz and Cole Tucker each had base hits as well in the winning effort for Pittsburgh. Jordan Lyles allowed one run on five hits while walking and whiffing three apiece, not factoring in the decision. Tyler Lyons picked up the win in relief to improve to 1-0 this season. Steven Brault will start game one and is 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA and 11 strikeouts this season. This will be Brault’s first career start against Texas.
Texas is 2-5 in Sampson’s last 7 starts and 17-36 in their last 53 road games while the over is 8-1 in their last 9 games against the NL Central. Pittsburgh is 2-6 in their last 8 home games and 23-6 in their last 29 interleague games while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. Texas is 2-6 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
Brault threw a pair of scoreless innings of relief against the Rangers in his last appearance, but he’s also had a couple of appearances where he allowed seven runs in five innings. Sampson hasn’t had the same kind of luck, and he threw 5.2 innings of scoreless ball in his last start against the Pirates just last week. Add in the fact that Texas owns one of the more powerful offensive units in the majors, and I think the plus money is worth a look on Tuesday.
