MLB | Toronto Blue Jays (8-7) at Tampa Bay Rays (8-8)

The Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays face off on Friday at Tropicana Field in game one of their MLB series of AL East teams.

The Tampa Bay Rays are in rebuilding mode but they have been competitive thus far this season. The Rays are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 3-6 at home, and they have won their last two games. As a team the Rays are hitting .231 with Logan Forsythe hitting .280, Steven Souza Jr. hitting .268, and Asdrubal Cabrera hitting .217. The Rays pitching staff has an ERA of 4.35 with the starters at 3.95 and the bullpen at 4.99. For game one against the Blue Jays the Rays start Drew Smyly who makes his first start of the year but last season after being traded to the Rays he allowed 25 hits and nine runs while striking out 44 over 47.2 innings for a 3-1 record and a 1.70 ERA.

The Toronto Blue Jays are part of the three-way tie for first place in the American League East. The Blue Jays have won their last three games, are 5-5 in their last 10 games, and 4-2 on the road this season. As a team the Blue Jays are hitting .263 with Devon Travis hitting .385, Josh Donaldson hitting .349, and Kevin Pillar hitting .274. The Blue Jays pitching staff has an ERA of 4.30 with the starters at 4.97 and the bullpen at 3.31. For game one against the Rays the Blue Jays start R.A. Dickey who has allowed 11 hits and seven runs while striking out 16 over 19.1 innings for a 0-1 record and a 3.26 ERA.

Tampa Bay is 6-1 against a team with a winning record, 1-5 in game one of a series, and 4-0 in Smyly’s last four starts. Toronto is 5-1 against a left-handed start, 3-8 as a road underdog, and 6-13 in Dickey’s last 19 road starts. Toronto is 1-4 in the last five meetings of these two.

The total is set at 7.5 and I have little confidence in the bullpens against these lineups so I have this one going over the total. My stronger play is on the winning side and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
