The Line: Cincinnati Reds +103 / Pittsburgh Pirates -113 --- Over/Under: 8
The Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates face off on Thursday for game three of their season opening series of NL Central teams.
After a two hour rain delay and extra innings the Cincinnati Reds pulled out the win on Wednesday in game two of their series with the Pirates. Billy Hamilton had three hits, Todd Frazier had two hits including a home run, and Joey Votto had two hits as the Reds scored five runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Mike Leake allowed five hits and three runs while striking out six over 5.2 innings to not factor in the decision as J.J. Hoover pitched two inning getting the win. For Thursday’s game the Reds start Anthony DeScalfani who was 2-2 with a 6.27 ERA working primarily in relief last season.
The Pittsburgh Pirates battled the entire game on Wednesday but they came up short falling to 0-2 for the season. On Wednesday Starling Marte, Pedro Alvarez, and Francisco Cervelli were among those Pirates getting hits as they scored four runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Gerit Cole allowed five hits and three runs while striking out six over 5.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Redhames Liz took the loss. For Thursday’s game the Pirates start A.J. Burnett who was 8-18 with a 4.59 ERA for the Phillies where he struck out 190 over 213.2 innings.
The Reds are 4-0 in their last four games, 4-1 as an underdog, 7-2 at home against a right-handed starter, and 5-2 after scoring five or more runs in their previous game. Pittsburgh is 16-6 as a favorite, 5-2 in game three of a series, 2-6 against a team with a winning record, and 3-8 in Burnett’s last 11 road starts. Pittsburgh is 0-4 in the last four meetings of these two.
I don’t like the way Burnett pitched last season and he will need to show he has it back before I back him this season.
