The Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres hook up for game one of their four game NL West division set from Petco Park in MLB action on Thursday.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to build some momentum after salvaging a series split with the Texas Rangers following a 6-4 win in the series finale on Tuesday. Daniel Descalso had a double and two RBIs, while Alex Avila and Paul Goldschmidt each had a solo home run. Jon Jay went 2 for 4 with an RBI as well in the winning effort, while Ketel Marte and Nick Ahmed each had a double, Steven Souza Jr. added a base knock to cap off Arizona’s offense in the win. Patrick Corbin got the win to improve to 10-4 this season after allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven over seven innings of work. Brad Boxberger closed out the 9th for his 27th save of the season. Clay Buchholz will start game one and is 5-2 with a 2.67 ERA and 55 strikeouts this season. In his career, Buchholz is 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA and 13 strikeouts against San Diego.
The San Diego Padres will be looking to bounce back after being swept by the Los Angeles Angels to start the week following a 3-2 loss in the series finale on Wednesday. Cory Spangenberg hit a solo shot while Hunter Renfroe added an RBI as well to round out San Diego’s scoring in the losing effort. Travis Jankowski and Eric Hosmer each added a double while Wil Myers chipped in a base hit of his own in the losing effort. Robbie Erlin gave up two runs on eight hits over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision, while Kirby Yates took the loss to fall to 4-1 this season. Jacob Nix will start game one and is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 4 strikeouts this season. This will be Nix’s first career start against Arizona.
Arizona is 4-1 in Buchholz’s last 5 starts and 21-10 in their last 31 road games while the over is 6-1 in their last 7 division matchups. San Diego is 1-10 in their last 11 home games against a team with a winning road record and 15-37 in their last 52 games overall while the over is 9-3-1 in their last 13 home games. Arizona is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams and 4-0 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams in San Diego.
Yes, I will concede that Nix pitched very well in his debut, but that doesn’t change the fact that the Padres remain unbackable as this team just has a hard time winning baseball games and are just counting down the days until the season ends. Arizona is in the thick of the playoff race, and while he took the loss in his last outing, Buchholz is enjoying a career resurgence with the D-BAcks and has been solid in both appearances he’s made in his career against San Diego. Flat out, we are getting a good price with the better team, so I’ll lay the juice with Arizona here.
