The Line: San Diego Padres -152 / Philadelphia Phillies +142 --- Over/Under: 7
The San Diego Padres and the Philadelphia Phillies face off on Monday Night at PETCO Park for game one of their series.
The San Diego Padres have hit a rough patch of late but they hope to have a strong final two weeks of the season. The Padres are 40-31 at home this season, 2-8 in their last 10 games, and they have lost their last two games. As a team the Padres are the worst hitters in baseball at .224 with Seth Smith hiting .268, Yangervis Solarte hitting .274, and Alexi Amerista is hitting .239. The Padres pitching staff has an ERA of 3.26 with the starters at 3.59 and the bullpen at 2.63. For game one against the Phillies the Padres start Andrew Cashner who won his last start. For the season Cashner has allowed 96 hits and 27 earned runs while striking out 75 over 101.1 innings for a 3-7 record and a 2.40 ERA.
The Philadelphia Phillies are in last place in the NL East and they are two weeks away from looking for answers over the off-season. The Phillies are 33-38 on the road, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and they are coming off of a loss on Sunday. As a team the Phillies are hitting .242 with Ben Revere hitting .309, Chase Utley hitting .274, and Marlon Byrd hitting .265. The Phillies pitching staff has an ERA of 3.83 with the starters at 3.94 and the bullpen at 3.61. For game one against the Padres the Phillies start Jerome Williams who is coming off of his first start since joining the Phillies. Since joining the Phillies Williams has allowed 33 hits and 14 earned runs while striking out 26 over 36.2 innings for a 3-1 record and a 3.44 ERA.
San Diego is 21-8 in their last 29 home games, 10-2 as a home favorite, and 2-5 in Cashner’s last seven starts as a favorite. Philadelphia is 7-2 in game one of a series, 1-5 as an underdog, and 4-1 in Williams’ last six starts. Philadelphia is 28-7 in their last 35 meetings with San Diego.
Runs should be fairly scarce and my free pick in this one is going to be on the under.
