MLB | Pittsburgh Pirates (24-22) at San Diego Padres (23-25)

The San Diego Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates face off on Thursday at PETCO Park in San Diego for game one of their MLB series.

The San Diego Padres have been a disappointment so far this season but they still have time to turn their season around. The Padres are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 11-12 at home, and they trail the Dodgers by 6 games in the NL West. As a team the Padres are hitting .248 with Justin Upton hitting .288, Derek Norris hitting .282, and Yangervis Solarte hitting .275. The Padres pitching staff has an ERA of 4.07 with the starters at 3.97 and the bullpen at 4.27. For game one against the Pirates the Padres start Ian Kennedy who has allowed 37 hits and 24 earned runs while striking out 32 over 35.1 innings for a 2-4 record and a 6.11 ERA.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are playing their best baseball of the season as they are clawing their way back into the race in the NL Central. The Pirates have won their last six games, are 9-13 on the road, and they are six games back in the NL Central. As a team the Pirates are hitting .249 with Starling Marte at .278, Andrew McCutchen at .262, and Josh Harrison at .259. the Pirates pitching staff has an ERA of 3.01 with the starters at 3.13 and the bullpen at 2.80. For game one against the Padres the Pirates start A.J. Burnett who has allowed 47 hits and nine runs while striking out 53 over 59 innings for a 4-1 record and a 1.37 ERA.

San Diego is 2-5 in game one of a series, 1-5 in their last six home games, and 2-5 in Kennedy’s last seven starts. Pittsburgh is 49-20 against a team with a losing record, 1-4 in their last five road games, and 4-0 in Burnett’s last five starts. Pittsburgh is 16-40 in their last 56 games against San Diego.

The total is set at 6.5 and I like the over and that is my free pick here but it is really just a lean based on the low number. My stronger play is on the winning side and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
