The Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres meet in game one of a mini two-game interleague set from Petco Park on Tuesday night.
The Seattle Mariners will look to rebound after failing to complete the sweep of the Los Angeles Angels, dropping the series finale on Sunday by a final score of 8-6. Mitch Haniger and Tom Murphy each had two hits with two RBIs including a home run and a double while Domingo Santana and Dee Gordon each went 2 for 4 with an RBI with Gordon hitting a solo homer and a double as well. Ryon Healy went 2 for 3 with a double to cap off Seattle’s offense as a team in the losing effort. Mike Leake took the loss, falling to 2-2 after allowing four runs on six hits while striking out four over six innings of work. Erik Swanson will start game one and is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA and 9 strikeouts this season. This will be Swanson’s first career start against San Diego.
The San Diego Padres will look to build some momentum after snapping a six game losing streak with a 4-3 win over Cincinnati in their series finale on Sunday, avoiding the sweep in the process. Wil Myers led the Padres by going 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs while Austin Hedges had a solo homer and Eric Hosmer had a double and an RBI to round out San Diego’s scoring in the winning effort. Fernando Tatis Jr., Manuel Margot, Manny Machado and Franmil Reyes each had a base hit as well in the victory for the Padres. Joey Lucchesi got the win to improve to 3-2 after allowing just one run on five hits while striking out eight over 5.2 innings of work. Kirby Yates closed out the 9th for his 10th save already this season. Nick Margevicius will start the opener and is 1-2 with a 3.60 ERA and 19 strikeouts this season. This will be Margevicius’ first career start against Seattle.
Seattle is 0-5 in their last 5 interleague games and 3-7 in their last 10 games overall while the over is 18-7-1 in their last 26 road games. San Diego is 1-6 in their last 7 games overall and 18-37 in their last 55 home games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a right-handed starter. Seattle is 0-4 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
I understand that San Diego is at home and Swanson has just one major league start under his belt, but other than that, I’m not sure why San Diego is favored here. The Padres have been playing some ugly baseball over the last week, and while Seattle had a rough patch, the Mariners are still 11-2 on the road this season. And it’s not like Swanson threw a dud in his first start, the guy threw six innings of one run ball. I simply think this line is backwards, but getting the better team at plus money sounds like a good deal to me so I’ll take Seattle and the plus money here.
