MLB | Washington Nationals (19-16) at San Diego Padres (18-17)

The San Diego Padres and the Washington Nationals face off on Thursday at Petco Park for game one of their MLB series of National League preseason favorites.

The San Diego Padres had a busy offseason putting together what they hoped would be a contender but they sit just a game over .500. The Padres are 9-7 at home, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and they are five games behind the Dodgers in the NL West standings. As a team the Padres are hitting .253 with Derek Norris hitting .295, Wil Myers hitting .291, and Justin Upton hitting .276. The Padres pitching staff has an ERA if 4.28 with the starters at 3.99 and he bullpen at 4.87. For game one against the Nationals the Padres start Tyson Ross who has allowed 39 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 48 over 40.2 innings for a 1-3 record and a 3.98 ERA.

The Washington Nationals started the season slow but they have been making a move up the standings and stringing together wins. The Nationals are 9-10 on the road, 8-2 in their last 10 games, and 1.5 games behind the Mets in the NL East standings. As a team the Nationals are hitting .257 with Yunel Escobar hitting .333, Wilson Ramos hitting .318, and Bryce Harper hitting .308. The Nationals pitching staff has an ERA of 3.77 with the starters at 3.89 and the bullpen at 3.50. For game one against the Padres the Nationals start Doug Fister who has allowed 38 hits and 12 runs while striking out 17 over 37.2 innings for a 2-1 record and a 2.87 ERA.

San Diego is 38-17 in their last 55 home games, 1-5 in game one of a series, and 1-4 in Ross’ last five starts. Washington is 4-0 in game one of a series, 3-7 as an underdog, and 8-3 in Fister’s last 11 starts. Washington is 9-4 in their last 13 games in San Diego.

The total is set at 6.5 but that looks to be agressively low and my free pick is the over. My stronger play is on the winning side and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
