Out at Safeco Field on Thursday, the MLB’s opening day festivities will include a matchup between the Cleveland Indians and the Seattle Mariners.
The Indians had a successful regular season in 2017, finishing at 102-60. In the playoffs however, Cleveland’s hopes dissipated as they fell to the Yankees in the first series, winning the first two before losing out the rest of the way.
Cleveland has a set of solid guys in the box this year, including Jason Kipnis, Yan Gomes and Francisco Lindor. They’ll be backing up the Indians’ Corey Kluber, who posted an 18-4 record last season with a 2.25 ERA in 203.2 innings.
Over on the Mariners’ side, they’re fresh off a 78-84 record last year, winning just four games from September 15 to the end of the year.
Seattle will pin their offensive hopes this season on the likes of Jean Segura, who put up 157 hits and 80 runs last season. Taking the mound in the opening game for the Mariners will be the veteran Felix Hernandez, who managed a 6-5 record with a 4.36 ERA in 86.2 innings in 2017.
The Indians are 22-5 in their last 27 during game one of a series and 44-11 in the last 55 overall. Cleveland is also 7-0 in Kluber’s last seven road starts and 6-0 in Kluber’s last six Thursday starts.
Meanwhile, the Mariners are 6-2 in the last eight following an off day and 4-11 in their last 15 overall. Seattle is also 4-1 in Hernandez’s last five starts and 4-1 in Hernandez’s last five Thursday starts.
The Mariners are fresh off a disappointing season, but judging by the spring performances of some of their players they’ve got some things to look forward to in 2018. As for the Indians, they’ll be pressing for an extended playoff run once again this season and will want to get right down to business. I’m going to to with Cleveland here.
