|Date & Time||Monday September 24, 2018, 10:10 PM (EDT)|
The Line: Seattle Mariners -130 / Oakland Athletics +110 --- Over/Under: 8
The Oakland A’s and the Seattle Mariners kick off a three game AL West division set from Safeco Field in MLB action on Monday.
The Oakland A’s will look to rebound after having their four game winning streak snapped thanks to a 5-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins in their last outing. Matt Olson went 3 for 4 with a solo home run to account for the lone Oakland RBI in the loss, while Stephen Piscotty and Ramon Laureano each had two hits with Laureano chipping in a double. Nick Martini added a base hit to round out Oakland’s offense in the losing effort. Trevor Cahill took the loss, allowing all five runs, three earned, on five hits while striking out five over 3.1 innings of work.Daniel Mengden will start game one and is 7-6 with a 4.00 ERA and 67 strikeouts this season. In his career, Mengden is 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA and 10 strikeouts against Seattle.
The Seattle Mariners will look to rebound after dropping the rubber match of their series with the Rangers by a final score of 6-1 on Sunday. Guillermo Heredia put up an RBI with a double to make up all of Seattle’s scoring in the loss. Robinson Cano went 2 for 4 while Jean Segura, Kyle Seager and Kristopher Negron each had a base hit to cap off Seattle’s offense in the defeat. Wade LeBlanc took the loss, falling to 8-5 this season after allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out five over five innings of work. James Paxton will start game one and is 11-6 with a 3.83 ERA and 194 strikeouts this season. In his career, Paxton is 4-0 with a 3.70 ERA and 62 strikeouts against Oakland.
Oakland is 6-2 in Mengden’s last 8 starts and 60-26 in their last 86 games overall while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a left-handed starter. Seattle is 1-4 in their last 5 home games and 4-0 in their last 4 games following a loss while the under is 8-3 in Paxton’s last 11 starts. Oakland is 8-17 in the last 25 meetings between these two teams and 2-8 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams in Seattle.
Paxton has had success against Oakland in his career, and Megnden as a starter was horrific at best. However, Paxton is making his first start after a fit of pneumonia, and allowed three or more runs in six of his last eight starts. Mengden has given up just one run in his last 14.2 innings of relief and the fact is that we are getting one of the hottest teams in baseball with something to play for at plus money on Monday, so I’ll take it and side with Oakland to draw first blood in the series.
