The St. Louis Cardinals and the Seattle Mariners meet in game one of a three game interleague set in MLB action from T-Mobile Park on Tuesday night.
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to build some momentum after snapping a five game losing skid and avoiding another series sweep with a 5-3 win over San Diego in their last outing. Yairo Munoz and Matt Wieters each had two RBIs with Munoz going 2 for 3 at the dish while Wieters hit a home run. Paul DeJong, Jose Martinez, Paul Goldschmidt, Tyler O’Neill, Miles Mikolas and Kolten Wong each had a base hit as well for the Cardinals in the winning effort. Mikolas gave up three runs on eight hits while striking out four in six innings in the start, not factoring in the decision. Carlos Martinez got the win to improve to 2-0 on the year while Dominic Leone closed out the game for his 1st save of the season. Jack Flaherty will start the opener and is 4-5 with a 4.75 ERA and 94 strikeouts this season. This will be Flaherty’s first career start against Seattle.
The Seattle Mariners will be out to snap a four game losing streak following a sweep at the hands of Houston including a 6-1 loss in the series finale on Sunday. J.P. Crawford’s solo home run was the lone RBI that the M’s would plate in the defeat. Domingo Santana went 2 for 3 at the dish while Mallex Smith, Omar Narvaez and Tim Beckham each had base hits as well in the loss. Marco Gonzalez took the loss falling to 9-7 after allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five over five innings of work. Matt Carasiti will be the opener for Seattle on Tuesday and is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 4 strikeouts this season. This will be Carasiti’s first start against St. Louis.
St. Louis is 3-8 in Flaherty’s last 11 road starts and 1-5 in their last 6 games overall while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 interleague road games. Seattle is 19-40 in their last 59 games overall and 0-5 in their last 5 interleague home games while the over is 7-3 in their last 10 games following a loss.
You can try to make a case for Seattle and the plus money given the fact that St. Louis probably doesn’t deserve to be favored on the road and the fact that Flaherty has an 8.02 ERA across his last four starts. However, I think that goes to speak to how poorly the Mariners are back to playing. Seattle showed some signs of life with a winning streak recently, but the Mariners are back to their losing ways and the offense isn’t showing up for the most part in those losses. St. Louis is the better team here and needs to win games like these if they’re going to make up ground in the division race, so I’ll lay the juice with the Cardinals on the road in game one.
