Arizona Diamondbacks / St. Louis Cardinals -- O/U:
The Arizona Diamondbacks and the St. Louis Cardinals meet in the rubber match of their three game set in MLB action from Busch Stadium on Sunday.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will look for a bounce back performance after a 4-2 loss to the Cardinals in game two on Saturday. Eduardo Escobar had a solo home run and Nick Ahmed added an RBI of his own to round out Arizona’s scoring as a team in the loss. Ketel Marte went 2 for 4 with a double to cap off Arizona’s offense in the defeat as the D-Backs had just four hits as a team in the losing effort, with the rest of the squad batting 0 for 20 with 8 strikeouts. Merrill Kelly took the loss, falling to 7-9 on the year after allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits while walking three and striking out five over five innings of work. Zack Greinke will start game three and is 10-3 with a 2.73 ERA and 108 strikeouts this season. In his career, Greinke is 13-5 with a 3.38 ERA and 106 strikeouts against St. Louis.
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to win the series after evening the set up at one win apiece on Saturday. Tyler O’Neill accounted for all four Cardinal RBIs, going 2 for 4 with a two run home run and a double. Matt Wieters went 2 for 3 while Matt Carpenter, Dexter Fowler and Kolten Wong each had base hits as well in the victory. Dakota Hudson got the win to improve to 8-4 on the year after allowing two runs on three hits while walking four and striking out eight over six innings of work. Carlos Martinez closed out the 9th for his 4th save of the season. Adam Wainwright will start game three and is 5-7 with a 4.31 ERA and 82 strikeouts this season. In his career, Wainwright is 8-5 with a 2.95 ERA and 66 strikeouts against Arizona.
Arizona is 6-1 in Greinke’s last 7 starts and 5-2 in their last 7 Sunday games while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. St. Louis is 3-7 in Wainwright’s last 10 starts and 2-7 in their last 9 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 15-4 in their last 19 home games. St. Louis is 5-2 in Wainwright’s last 7 starts against Arizona while Arizona is 4-1 in Greinke’s last 5 starts against St. Louis.
St. Louis has had some success with Wainwright on the mound against Arizona, but that’s not enough to sway me against Arizona here. Greinke has been stellar once again, currently sitting on back-to-back seven inning shutouts, and shutouts in four of his last six starts. Greinke’s ERA is also lower on the road this season and the Diamondbacks have had their own success with Greinke on the mound against the Cardinals, so I’ll side with Arizona in the rubber match on Sunday.
